Medical Student Section (MSS) national leadership positions

Governing Council

The Medical Student Section (MSS) Governing Council (GC) directs the programs and activities of the section on a national level. The MSS activities are overseen by an 8-member Governing Council that is elected by the Medical Student Section Assembly at each Annual Meeting, except for the chair-elect who is elected at the Interim Meeting.


  • Appoint the remainder of the MSS leadership
  • Carry out policies and actions items adopted by the assembly
  • Direct the MSS agenda and strategies

Term of Service: 1 year, commencing in June (except for the chair-elect and immediate past chair)

AMA Board of Trustees—student member

The Board of Trustees guides the activities of the AMA and ensures that the AMA remains focused on its essential reason for being: to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The board is composed of 21 members, including a medical student member elected by the MSS at each Interim Meeting.


  • Must attend a board of trustees meeting approximately every 8 weeks
  • Will be required to attend a 2-day orientation in July
  • Should attend each meeting of the MSS Governing Council and meetings of the trustee’s assigned council
  • Should attend their state and county medical society meetings

Term of Service: 1 year, with the option to run for a second 1-year term, commencing in June

Government Relations Advocacy Fellow

The AMA Government Relations Advocacy Fellow (GRAF) offers medical students a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the intersection between organized medicine and the federal government as it relates to advocacy and policy-making. One fellow is selected each spring to live and work in Washington, D.C., as a full-time, paid member of the AMA’s federal advocacy team for 1 year.


  • Research and analyze current issues in health and medical education policy
  • Travel to medical schools around the U.S. to engage membership and develop leaders
  • Plan and organize the annual AMA Medical Student Advocacy and Region Conference in Washington, D.C.
  • Meet and work with leaders in health care policy and advocacy to implement the AMA's action plan on key issues

Appointments to AMA Councils 

One of the Medical Student Section’s most powerful advocacy tools is to appoint student members to the AMA Councils. Medical student members of the AMA are appointed by the MSS Governing Council to serve on each of the 7 AMA Councils. These student councilors are responsible for providing the medical student perspective on topics discussed by the councils and for reporting back to the MSS on council actions and activities.

Medical student members of the AMA are also appointed to serve as representatives/liaisons to other AMA groups and to organizations that work closely with the AMA. These students represent the MSS position on various issues and report back to the MSS on activities that have the potential to affect medical students.


  • Provide a student perspective on topics discussed by the AMA councils
  • Report back to the MSS on AMA council actions and activities

Term of Service: 1 year, commencing in June, with the exception of the CEJA student member whose term is 2 years

Medical student regional delegates

Elected by the MSS regions at each Interim Meeting, medical student regional delegates and alternate delegates represent the interests of medical students in the AMA House of Delegates (HOD).


  • Provide medical students the opportunity to participate in the policy-making process and impact the issues on which the AMA advocates.
  • Regional delegates are full voting members of the HOD and are seated with their state caucuses.

Term of Service: 1 year, commencing in January

MSS standing committees

Appointed annually by the MSS Governing Council, the MSS standing committees support the mission of the MSS by performing various tasks as requested by the GC.

MSS convention committees

Convention committees are small, representative groups that expedite the conduct of business at meetings of the MSS Assembly (each June and November). Serving on a convention committee is a great way to start getting involved in the AMA.


Tasks and responsibilities vary by committee.

Terms of Service: 1 national meeting with responsibilities generally commencing 1 month prior to the meeting

Minority Affairs Section Governing Council

The Minority Affairs Section (MAS) addresses the issues and concerns of underrepresented minority physicians and improving the health of minority populations. One medical student is elected annually to the MAS Governing Council.


  • Participate in monthly teleconferences
  • Attend 3 in-person meetings per year (including Annual and Interim meetings)
  • Review resolutions and determine policy priorities
  • Support section activities (e.g., Doctors Back to School™ program)
  • Serve on the Minority Scholars Award selection committee

Women Physicians Section Governing Council

The Women Physicians Section (WPS) furthers issues related to women’s health and works to accelerate the professional progress of women physicians through leadership development, training and advocacy. One medical student is elected annually to the WPS Governing Council.


  • Attend up to 3 meetings per year
  • Carry out responsibilities as agreed to by the governing council
  • Implement/participate in WPS projects such as Women in Medicine Month

Advisory Committee on LGBTQ Issues

The Advisory Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Issues provides an advocacy forum for addressing the unique issues of LGBTQ physicians and patients.


  • Carry out responsibilities as agreed to by the committee.
  • Implement/participate in LGBTQ projects.

AMA Foundation Board—student representative

The AMA Foundation (AMAF) is the philanthropic arm of the AMA. The AMAF Board of Directors is composed of at least 13 and no more than 20 members, including a medical student representative. Because many of AMAF's activities involve assistance to medical students, the student member of the board provides valuable input to the board’s deliberations.


  • Attend AMA Foundation Board meetings, 3 times per year (fall, winter and spring).
  • Participate in conference calls.
  • Attend the activities of the foundation at the Annual Meeting in June and the Interim Meeting in November.
  • The board will also appoint the student representative to serve on board committees.

AMPAC Board—student member

The American Medical Political Action Committee (AMPAC) supports the AMA’s advocacy agenda by making campaign contributions to medicine-friendly candidates for Congress. The AMPAC Board of Directors guides these efforts. The board includes 1 student member who serves a 2-year term. Only students graduating in the spring of 2016 or later are eligible to apply.


  • Must attend all AMPAC meetings.
  • Will serve as the chair of a self-selected student advisory board and coordinate activities.

FDA-AMA elective rotation program

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) Professional Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement (PASE) at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) is offering a 4-week elective rotation for one AMA medical student. During the rotation, the interns are assigned to a preceptor, a medical officer at CDER, and work directly with their preceptor on issues related to drug development, drug review and drug safety.

They also have the opportunity to learn about FDA’s regulatory activities and its role in enhancing collaboration with health care professionals, patients and patient advocacy groups. The selected applicant will receive a stipend from the AMA as well as an opportunity to meet with AMA staff at the D.C. office.

Liaison Committee on Medical Education—student representative

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) is the joint Committee of the AMA and the Association of American Medical Colleges that serves as the nationally recognized accrediting agency for U.S. allopathic medical schools.


Student members of the LCME participate fully in LCME activities, including serving on one survey team during the year, and have full voting privileges. The selected students will begin their official year of service on July 1st but also will be expected to attend the June LCME meeting as an orientation.


  • The applicant must be a 4th-year medical student during the 2019-2020 academic year. If an MD/PhD student, he or she must have completed the clerkship year.
  • The applicant should be in good academic standing and be able to commit sufficient time to LCME duties, including attending 3 LCME meetings during the year, participating in 1 survey visit, and serving as a reviewer of reports from survey teams and schools.
  • The student should show evidence of interest in medical education, such as curriculum committee membership and/or participation in accreditation or other quality assurance activities at the school.
  • A letter of support from the dean or dean’s-designate is required.

National Board of Medical Examiners Advisory Committee

The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) governs the licensing exams taken by all medical students and physicians. The NBME Advisory Committee, consisting of academic and medical associations and medical student organizations, is charged with improving communications and enhancing relationships between the medical education community and the NBME in areas of mutual interest.


  • Present the MSS position on NBME issues.
  • Keep the MSS informed of changes involving education.
  • Participate in a 1-day meeting in Philadelphia and in several 2-3 hour conference calls throughout the year. 

Terms of Service: 2 years commencing June 1, 2019 through May 30, 2021

National Resident Matching Program Board of Directors—student representative

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) coordinates the residency match process for applicants and residency programs. The NRMP Board directs the policies and procedures governing the match process, including defining the structure and timing of the match, setting fees, and developing and communicating participant responsibilities. If selected, the AMA medical student representative functions as a liaison between the AMA and the NRMP Board.


  • Attend 2 board meetings per year, in October and May, in Washington, D.C. 
  • Participate in conference calls and in-person committee meetings, as needed. 
  • (New members) attend an orientation session in June.
