International Medical Graduates Section (IMG) Committees

International Medical Graduates Section members can also be a member of an International Medical Graduates Section Committee. Governing Council members must serve as a chair of an International Medical Graduates Section Committee and have proficient computer knowledge.

There are 9 different Section Committees with unique roles and responsibilities, and 1 special interest group for United States International Medical Graduates (USIMG).

2015–2016 International Medical Graduates Section Committees

Resolutions and Reports Committee

Committee Goals:

  • Develop at least 3 well-written and researched reports or resolutions for the Interim and Annual House of Delegates meetings.
  • Identify 2 issues that require International Medical Graduates advocacy efforts.

Research, Development and Graduate Medical Education Committee

Committee Goals:

  • Recruit at least 5 committee members.
  • Effectively lead the survey discussions and analyses.
  • Review various surveys for possible publishing ideas or proposals.
  • Work with the Council on Medical Education Subcommittee on Graduate Medical Education to assist with the following:
    • Advance the GME efforts of the International Medical Graduates Section.
    • Provide input on CME Reports.
  • Work to ensure that International Medical Graduates Section continue to obtain GME positions now and in the future.
  • Direct GME effort at state and federal level.
  • Work to raise awareness of GME problem at the grassroots level.

Nominating Committee

Committee goals:

  • Recruit a diverse pool of candidates for the International Medical Graduates Section Governing Council elections.
  • Present a diverse slate for the International Medical Graduates Section Governing Council election online ballots.

Committee for Internal & External Relationships

Committee Goals:

  • Recruit at least 10 diverse committee members.
  • Develop a liaison relationship with external IMG groups (states, specialties, or ethnic associations, state legislators) and internal Sections and Special Groups of the AMA.
  • Create 1 new International Medical Graduates Section/Committee in at least 1 state that does not have one.
  • Collaborate with Desserts Reception Committee to assist with obtaining funding support.

Leadership Development Program

Committee Goals:

  • Recruit at least 10 diverse committee members.
  • Develop the program/speaker for the Busharat Ahmad, MD Leadership Program at the Interim and Annual meeting.
  • Discover what resources or tools international medical graduates need in order to ascend into leadership positions.

Desserts Reception

Committee Goals:

  • Develop, plan and promote the Desserts Reception beginning in January.
  • Obtain sponsorships to host desserts from around the world reception in June.

Social Media

Committee goals:

  • Develop team of committee members to devise ideas for social media regarding International Medical Graduates Section.
  • Transmit ideas to International Medical Graduates staff and AMA-branded team.

20th Anniversary Symposium Planning Committee

Committee Goals:

  • To develop programming for 2016 AMA Symposium.
  • Work with IMG staff to solicit funding and speakers. (Program contingent on funding.)

Liaison committees: Commission to End Health Care Disparities

Committee Goals:

  • Attend and participate in all commission meetings, alert staff if unable to attend a meeting so a substitute can be provided.
  • Report back (written or verbally) twice a year to the International Medical Graduates Section Congress and the International Medical Graduates Section Governing Council on the commission activities and areas of opportunities for the International Medical Graduates Section.

AMA-USMIG Special Interest Group

For all U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are attending medical school outside of the U.S. but have not yet attained certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, join this special interest group to access resources and networking opportunities.
