Elections will be held at the Annual Meeting of the House of Delegates on June 14, 2022.
Officers and four councils are elected by the American Medical Association House of Delegates (HOD) at the Annual Meeting. The elections are by secret ballot and are conducted under the supervision of the Committee on Rules and Credentials and the chief teller, who are appointed by the speaker and vice speaker, who are responsible for overall administration of the elections.
Russ Kridel, MD, has led at all levels of the AMA, having helped form the MSS, served on the RFS and SSS governing councils, chaired CSAPH, and served on the AMA Foundation board and on the AMA Board of Trustees, culminating as its chair. He continues to make a difference in all he does.
Russ cares passionately that physicians, health care workers and patients be treated fairly and equally. As a medical student, he was moved by inequities in health care and medicine to become a life-long advocate for change. He created a leadership path within his specialty, plastic and reconstructive surgery, for female physicians that led to the first female president of AAFPRS. As AMA board chair, he helped strengthen the AMA Center for Health Equity. In his private practice, he formed The Face Foundation, providing no-cost treatment for domestic violence victims. Russ gives of himself unselfishly and gets results.
As board chair during the pandemic, Russ advocated vigorously for PPE for physicians. He worked to expand telemedicine access to continue patient care and ease the financial pressure on physician practices. COVID-19 revealed deep cracks in our health care system. As your president, Russ will work to correct these flaws with the voice of an actively practicing physician. He’s acutely aware of the stresses of the past two years, from trainees reassigned to provide COVID care at the expense of residency education to physicians working endlessly to the detriment of family time and personal well-being. Russ’ experience on CSAPH enables him to speak authoritatively about redistributing health care dollars to correct these deficiencies and improve our neglected public health system.
As the mosaic of AMA membership makes us strong and effective, we must ensure all members’ voices are heard and get results. Russ will champion the needs of all AMA members.
Russ has been your voice as he has testified for physicians’ and patients’ interests in our national and state capitals. Since his college years at Stanford working as a DJ, Russ knows how to be heard!
As a faculty member teaching medical students and residents and directing a fellowship program, Russ knows medical education. Having served on a council and led our board through the pandemic, Russ knows public health. Running an active medical practice and having overseen a foundation, Russ knows the economics of medicine and the challenges practicing physicians face. Leading and advocating for physicians since medical school, Russ knows our issues and how to achieve solutions.
