The Council on Medical Education recognizes the learning that occurs in completing these activities and allows physicians to claim AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™directly from the AMA for the activities defined in this section. One certificate will be provided for each type of activity claimed.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credit

PDF 1: Direct credit application

Use the direct credit application to claim AMA PRA Category 1 Credit  for the following activities if they were accomplished in the last 6 years:

  • Teaching at a live AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ activity
  • Publishing article(s)
  • Preparing poster presentation(s)
  • Finishing a medically related advanced degree
  • Achieving American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member board certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC)
  • Participating successfully in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency or fellowship program

Teaching at a live activity

Preparing and presenting an original presentation at a live activity that has been certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™  (if the accredited CME provider has not already awarded credit for this)

Documentation required: A copy of the page(s) used by the provider to announce or describe the activity which includes the name of the speaker, accredited CME provider, AMA Credit Designation Statement, date and location of the activity

Credit assignment: 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ per 1 hour of presentation time

Publishing articles

Publishing, as the lead author (first listed), a peer-reviewed article in a journal included in the MEDLINE bibliographic database

Documentation required: A reprint or copy of the page(s) of the journal, which include the name of the author listed first, the name of the journal and date published

Credit assignment: 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™per article

Poster presentations

Preparing a poster presentation, as the first author, which is included in the published abstracts, at an activity certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™

Documentation required: A copy of the page(s) in the published activity documents that lists the author and poster abstract, accredited CME provider, AMA Credit Designation Statement, title and date of activity

Credit assignment: 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ per poster

Medically related advanced degrees

Obtaining a medically related advanced degree, such as a Master’s in Public Health (not available if the academic program certified individual courses for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ )

Documentation required: A copy of the diploma or final transcript

Credit assignment: 25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™

ABMS Member Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC)

Successful completion of an ABMS board certification or MOC process

Documentation required: A copy of the board certificate or the specialty board notification letter

Credit assignment: Certifications completed on or after Sept. 1, 2010: 60 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ awarded.

Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited education

Successful participation in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program

Documentation required: A copy of the certificate or letter of completion from the approved residency/fellowship program

Credit assignment: 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ per year

Resident application for the AMA PRA and direct credit

Participants in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program may apply for the AMA PRA and direct credit certificate. Residents and fellows can obtain a 1-, 2- or 3-year PRA commensurate with the number of years completed in the residency or fellowship program. In addition, residents and fellows may also apply for 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for each completed year of participation in a residency or fellowship program.
