Earning credit for participation in international activities
Physicians may earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for participation in select international educational activities.
AMA will convert Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners (QCHP) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours of participation. The American Medical Association (AMA) and the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners Accreditation Department have entered into an agreement regarding CME/CPD credit. Under this new agreement, select activities approved for QCHP CPD credit are eligible to have the hours of participation converted to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. This agreement will be effective as of Jan. 1, 2017, and in place through Dec. 31, 2018.
Agreement with the European Union of Medical Specialties (UEMS)
The AMA will convert CME credit issued to physicians for participation in live and e-learning activities certified by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME), the accrediting arm of the UEMS, to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
Agreement with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
AMA will convert Royal College MOC credits. The American Medical Association (AMA) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College) have renewed their CME agreement. Under the new agreement, select activities approved for Royal College MOC Credits are eligible for conversion to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. This agreement is in place from Jan. 1, 2013 through Dec. 31, 2016.
International Conference Recognition (ICR) program
The ICR program recognizes a few conferences presented by international organizations each year and provides physicians with an opportunity to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ at these approved events.
Prior to June 24, 2013 the Canadian medical schools had been able to designate live continuing medical education activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and award that credit to physician participants. That privilege ceased on June 24, 2013 but certain activities after that date have been grandfathered, and physicians are able to claim AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for their participation in these specific activities.
Other CME activities
Physicians may also earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ by participating in CME activities certified through American organizations accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or an ACCME-recognized state medical society. Accredited providers may designate activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ regardless of the location of the activity. A physician attending such an event would receive credit directly from the accredited provider. For a list of accredited providers, visit www.accme.org.
