Spend a weekend in our nation’s capital! Not only will you have a remarkable opportunity to advocate for the future of medicine, but you will also:

  • Participate in interactive sessions about current legislation affecting students and learn how to be a successful advocate.
  • Spend a full afternoon on Capitol Hill to meet with your senators and representatives.
  • Network and socialize with students from across the country to discuss region business, advocacy and leadership opportunities.
  • Take your professional headshot photo.

Education on the issues

This interactive session, led by the GRAF and several AMA lobbyists, will provide students with background information on the focused agenda for your congressional visits.

8:00 am - 8:30 am
Effective lobbying techniques

Learn important tips for your Capitol Hill visits from Todd Askew, director of congressional affairs at the AMA. This session will prepare you for your Capitol Hill visits later in the day.

8:30 am - 9:30 am
Advocacy workshop

Attend an interactive training session with the AMA lobbying team where students can learn how to navigate a visit to Capitol Hill. Students will have the chance to observe a mock visit using their specific “asks” and to ask questions.

9:30 am - 10:15 am
Capitol Hill preparation

Gather with the students from your state, assign speaking roles and practice your talking points.

10:15 am - 11:00 am

Walk to the Hill and gather at the steps of the Capitol for a group picture in your white coats. Picture will be taken promptly at 10:50 am.

11:00 am - 4:30 pm
Capitol Hill visits

Please respect the busy schedule of your legislators and arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled meeting. There are dining options available in the Capitol, House and Senate buildings.

Networking reception

Debrief your Capitol Hill visits and network with fellow medical student MARC attendees and learn about leadership opportunities with the AMA.

Region breakout meetings

Discuss business, hold elections, organize local community service efforts and highlight student members within region moving medicine.
