The AMA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Medical Association; a 501(c)(3) dedicated to recognizing outstanding medical leaders and innovative community health initiatives.

Our mission is to bring together physicians and community to improve our nation’s health.

History of the AMA Foundation

In 1950, the AMA Board of Trustees chartered the American Medical Education Foundation (AMEF) as a 501(c)(3) organization to receive and distribute funds for medical education. Medical schools were running high annual deficits and turning away students with great potential because the cost of education was so high and there was a lack of resources to support them.

Several years later a separate 501(c)(3) was created – the American Medical Research Foundation (AMRF) – to receive funds from donors to finance beneficial medical research involving costs which could not be solely supported by the AMA itself. Eventually these 2 separate foundations were combined into the AMA-ERF, serving the organization as such for more than 35 years.

In 1998, the foundation underwent a strategic planning process to evaluate programs, governance and administration. As a result, the AMA Foundation was born with expanded programmatic goals and its own Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of 3 AMA Board of Trustee members, three Alliance members and several external members of diverse backgrounds.

Most recently, in 2016, the AMA Foundation finalized a new, focused program portfolio to strengthen the impact of its programs.
