Albert J. Osbahr III, MD, is the current medical director of occupational health services at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in Spartanburg, S.C., a position he has held since December of 2016. Previously he served in a similar role at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, N.C., as their medical director of occupational health services from 2004 to 2016. Prior to that he was the medical director at Haywood Regional Medical Center in Clyde, N.C., for 14 years. He is a past president of the North Carolina Medical Society (2008–2009) and a past member of its Industrial Commission Liaison Committee and Hospital Medical Staff Committee.
On the national level, he has served as a delegate for North Carolina at the American Medical Association meetings beginning in 1998. Twice elected to the AMA Council on Science and Public Health, first in 2004 and then 2008, Dr. Osbahr served as chair of the council in 2010–2011. Prior to 2004, he was a member of the AMA Council on Medical Service for eight years.
Dr. Osbahr’s additional appointments include having served as a member of the North Carolina Governor’s Task Force on Public Health and on the very first Review Panel of the North Carolina Medical Board. He is a member of the national One Health Commission board of directors, serving as its chairman from 2010 to 2014. He was also appointed by the U.S. Department of Transportation to the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration’s Medical Review Board in 2010. In 2012 Dr. Osbahr was first appointed to The Joint Commission’s board of commissioners for a three-year term. Today he is in his second term on the board while also serving on The Joint Commission’s accreditation, performance measurement and audit committees.
Dr. Osbahr served from 1998 to 2017 as a medical consultant and the lab director for Haywood County Health Department. He also provides medical review work for the Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence, Network Medical Review Inc., ExamWorks Inc. and the North Carolina Department of Disability Services, which utilize his services for disability exams. Additionally, he has been a medical consultant to Evergreen Packaging, Canton, N.C., from 2004 to 2016.
His board certifications include the American Board of Family Medicine, the American Board of Preventive Medicine in both occupational medicine and preventive medicine/public health, and the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. He is certified as a Medical Review Officer through the American Association of Medical Review Officers.
Dr. Osbahr holds BA (1980) and MD (1985) degrees from the University of North Carolina. He completed his family medicine residency in 1989 at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and his occupational/preventive medicine residency in 1990 at the University of Kentucky. At Marshall University, he also received a MS in community medicine.
