Fifth International Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publication

The Fifth International Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publication was held September 16-18, 2005, in Chicago, Illinois. As with the previous Congresses, our aim was to improve the quality and credibility of biomedical peer review and publication and to help advance the efficiency, effectiveness, and equitability of the dissemination of biomedical information throughout the world. Four hundred seventy participants from 38 countries attended the Congress.

During the Congress, 42 reports of new research were presented in plenary sessions and 53 posters were presented. Research topics included: authorship; conflicts of interest; journal guidelines and policies; ethical concerns; peer review process; scientific misconduct; publication bias and funding/sponsorship; publication bias and journal factors; affects of journal indexing, open access, the Web/Internet, and impact factor, and trial registration requirements on journals; dissemination of scientific information to the public; quality of journal articles; and the quality of reporting of research and clinical trials.
