American Medical Association Overview

• What is the AMA?
  The American Medical Association (AMA) is a nationally recognized organization of over 1,200 employees. Founded in 1847, the AMA has grown to become the nation's largest medical professional association, representing the viewpoints of nearly every U.S. physician (M.D. and D.O.) and medical student through medicine's own policy-making body -- the AMA's House of Delegates. Through the House of Delegates, and AMA members and staff, the AMA is able to: 1) promote the art and science of medicine by contributing to the professionalism and personal development of physicians; and 2) work for the betterment of public health by distributing information, advocating health-related rights, and addressing issues that affect public health.

  The AMA is also a strong business entity with assets of over $215 million. AMA products serve the needs of practicing physicians and promote healthier lifestyles for the American public.

• A Professional Work Environment
  AMA headquarters, located in Chicago, Illinois, houses over 1000 staff including affiliates, and is a landmark building designed by an internationally acclaimed architect. It symbolizes the AMA's prominent profile in a city recognized for its commerce, industry, and culture. AMA headquarters, with its full service cafeteria, cash machine, cashier, and in-house travel service, offers a full range of activities/services to all staff.

  Walking distance to the Loop and to North Michigan Avenue, the AMA is located in the city's River North district, known for its restaurants, shops, entertainment and art galleries.

  The AMA's Washington DC office is home to almost 100 employees. In the center of the Washington business district with easy access to Congress and the Executive Agencies, here the AMA conducts federal and political affairs.

  AMA's East Coast offices in New Jersey/New York, with approximately 20 employees, handle advertising sales for AMA publications including The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and American Medical News (AM News).
