Post-Test Uncertainty

Uncertainty with a Positive Result

Rebecca is struggling with the uncertainty that her positive test result presents. She tells you, "Now I keep wondering when it's going to happen? Will I worry for the next 25 years and get cancer when I'm 55? And what is it going to be breast or ovarian or both? I don't know how to deal with so many variables!"

In helping Rebecca deal with this uncertainty it is important to give her some options that will empower her. Examples are: enrolling her in a screening program for breast and/or ovarian cancer, referring her to support groups and encouraging her to perform self-surveillance. Many women find that if they are actively fighting their breast/ovarian cancer that they feel more in control.
