Psychosocial Impact

Impact of a Positive Result

When you give Rebecca her test results she is shocked. Prior to testing, Rebecca had believed she would be sad and depressed to know she had a mutation, but that it would be what she was expecting.

Rebecca: I thought I was prepared for this result...I thought I knew I had a mutation but now that it is written right here in front of me, I don't know what to say.

You ask: Is this how you expected you might feel?

Rebecca: In a certain sense this is what I imagined but ignorance was bliss and now I know what I am faced with...

You add: What kinds of things are you thinking about right now that you didn't think about before?

Rebecca: I am wondering how I am going to tell my brother and sister and cousins? And if I should have a mastectomy? There are so many things going through my head right now I don't know where to begin...I'm thinking about...my imminent death.
