| What
if Rebecca cannot afford genetic testing?
Genetic
testing for breast and ovarian cancer is approximately
$2600. Although some individuals elect to pay for this
test out-of-pocket, most insurers provide coverage.
Information from Myriad Genetics (the company who markets
the BRACAnalysis® test) indicates that over 2,000
insurance plans have provided reimbursement. Their data
shows that reimbursement was obtained for 97% of submitted
claims, with an average of 94% of the total cost of
the test covered by insurance. Access to genetic testing
may be more of an issue for individuals without insurance
and without the financial means to pay for testing.

we have a societal duty to make genetic testing
