Ethical Issues in Genetic Testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2

Intended Audience
This web-based module on the ethical issues surrounding genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer will be of interest and value to all physicians, especially those who counsel patients that are interested in undergoing genetic testing. Although this module focuses on genetic testing for the two breast cancer genes so far identified, BRCA1 and BRCA2, the ethical issues presented here have been identified in a project, "Genetics in Primary Care: Addressing Ethical and Professional Challenges," (full reference) supported by a grant from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. This project is relevant to the process that a patient undergoes when considering any genetic test and will be relevant to many disease processes.

Presently there are few genetic tests available for common diseases; however, this will change at ever increasing pace.
