Case Introduction

Family History

In reviewing Rebecca's family history (click here for full pedigree/family history tree) it becomes clear that in addition to her mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 40 and her maternal aunt who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 37, Rebecca's grandmother died of a "female cancer" in her 40's.

You discuss that this could have been ovarian cancer (NCI link) but that it cannot be confirmed without medical records.

Based on her family history, you review autosomal dominant (NHGRI definition) inheritance with Rebecca and discuss what family members may be at risk for developing breast and/or ovarian cancer.
