Shorter workweek, high tech: Key attractions for new physicians

For young physicians, squeezing full-time hours into four days a week is the most desired flexible schedule when considering practice opportunities, according to a new survey by a physician placement firm featured in American Medical News.

The survey, by Cejka Search, found that half of residents and fellows labeled the four-day workweek as important or very important in their practice search. The next most popular options were job sharing and part-time work (between 20 and 40 hours in a full workweek).

Not surprisingly, the new generation of physicians also is embracing technology in health care as a means to improve efficiency, allowing for better patient care and helping ensure work-life balance. Electronic health records and mobile apps are seen as particularly useful, as described in a recent AP article. Young doctors also value teamwork among physicians and other health professionals, which emphasizes the need for rapid and easy sharing of patient data among team members.

The AMA offers resources for residents and fellows transitioning into practice, including how to negotiate the best contract and the two-part guide "Succeeding from Medical School to Practice."
