Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a certification system for ePrescribing systems?
Yes. ePrescribing applications and EMR systems with ePrescribing functionality are certified by SureScripts-RxHub, the largest ePrescribing network. The current certification is based on compliance with industry standards, specifically the NCPDP Script Standard.

If your practice is looking for an EMR system with ePrescribing functionality, the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) certifies EMR systems based on a large number of functional criteria, including ePrescribing capability. CCHIT has plans underway to certify ePrescribing systems.

Technology

What type of basic technology do I need to begin ePrescribing?
All ePrescribing systems require a high-quality, high-speed Internet connection, desktops where appropriate and other end-user devices to support the desired workflow. Except in those rare cases where desktops are the primary end-user device, a wireless network is also recommended. Most vendors offer choices in technologies and tailor offerings to the specific requirements of practices.
