Comment on proposed AMA policy starting Friday
AMA members can comment on suggested policy at the AMA Interim Meeting via the Online Member Forums, set to open Friday.
These forums, which were previously called Virtual Reference Committees, have been renamed to better engage members and secure their input on policy.
All items of business that appear in the initial reports and resolutions will be posted in the online forums, and comments will be accepted from Oct. 18 until 6 p.m. Central Time Nov. 3. AMA members will be able to access the forums directly by visiting ama-assn.org/go/hodforum (AMA member login required).
Online forums have allowed AMA members to weigh in on key policy issues facing medicine from the comfort of their homes or offices. They have permitted physicians and medical students, delegates and non-delegates alike, to add their voices to the AMA policy discussion at their convenience.
"I felt the virtual reference committees did streamline the process," said Kenneth Crabb, MD, a member of the AMA House of Delegates from Minnesota. "It made for a shorter reference committee and at least in June made for a much shorter House floor discussion."
"For the newbies, they have a chance to see what the lay-of-the-land is and identify some of the key players. They arrive better prepared to participate in the workings of the House," Dr. Crabb added.
Resolutions and reports up for discussion at the 2013 Interim Meeting address such topics as:
- Decreasing the Medicare payment recovery period
- Prohibition of tobacco sales in businesses that provide health care-related services
- New rules for emergency room care
- Patient’s choice of management of end-of-life care
- Pharmacist administration of immunizations
- Payment mechanisms for team-based care
In accordance with policy adopted in June, summaries of the comments will be prepared. They will include verbatim comments from participants and will be maintained in the members-only area of the AMA website.
