AMA members: Provide feedback on important topics in medical ethics

A new online forum gives AMA members an opportunity to participate in the work of the AMA council responsible for maintaining and updating the 165-year-old AMA Code of Medical Ethics.

The online forum (AMA member login required) enables the AMA Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) to share questions, ideas and work in progress with AMA members and learn from their feedback. Members also can suggest new topics or issues of concern they would like CEJA to look at more closely.

The forum's first topic of discussion is an analysis of key ethical concerns in the challenging area of physicians' exercise of conscience in patient care. The analysis, which reflects CEJA deliberations over the past year, explores the interplay between physicians' deeply held personal beliefs and their responsibilities as members of the medical profession.

Previously, CEJA solicited broader physician input twice a year during the semi-annual policymaking meetings of the AMA House of Delegates. While the council will continue these in-person opportunities, the new online forum will enable physicians to participate in the AMA's stewardship of the AMA's Code of Medical Ethics throughout the year.
