Learn about your utilization review protections
An AMA webinar will discuss patient and physician protections built into regulations that govern health insurers' utilization review practices. Register today.
Offered at 1 p.m. Eastern time Jan. 22, this hourlong webinar will help physicians understand common state and federal protections for how health insurers use utilization review processes to determine whether a medical item or service is medically necessary.
An experienced health law attorney will explain how physicians can ensure their practices and patients are benefitting from their full rights under these regulations.
This webinar is part of an ongoing series on managed care contracting. Past webinars are archived for on-demand viewing.
Visit the AMA Practice Management Center to access resources that can help physicians negotiate fair contracts and navigate relationships with health insurers.
Navigate rules of the road for self-referral practices
An AMA toolkit helps physicians identify a wide variety of permissible referral arrangements while avoiding the kinds of self-referrals that are prohibited by law.
The "Stark Law Rules of the Road" toolkit can help physicians comply with the complex set of self-referral regulations, sometimes referred to as the "Stark law." An easy-to-use interactive tool guides physicians through six questions to determine how the Stark law might apply to them. The tool also defines key terms and explains a number of exceptions to the law that permit certain self-referrals.
For examples of how to interpret the law, the toolkit also provides a detailed overview document, which outlines some of the law's main requirements and exceptions.
