Thought leaders suggest 10 solutions for a high-performing Medicare system

A recent summit in the nation's capital brought together physician and health policy experts to discuss the newest ideas for overhauling the Medicare payment system.

Underwritten by the AMA, the National Journal policy summit focused on what needs to happen to build a higher-performing Medicare system. Panelists identified gaps between widespread health care needs and current delivery and payment models, and pointed to successful innovations in other sectors of health care.

From this discussion came "common-sense ways that Congress and the health care community can work together to reimagine Medicare," AMA Executive Vice President and CEO James L. Madara (pictured above left), MD, said in his remarks at the summit.

An easy-to-read recap, recently published in the National Journal, summarizes 10 key suggestions these thought leaders emphasized throughout the summit. Among the actions put forth were the following:

  • Eliminate the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula.
  • Promote physician leadership to implement new health care delivery and payment models.
  • Embrace private-sector innovation.
  • Implement multi-payer solutions.
  • Engage patients to be part of the solution.

The AMA continues to urge lawmakers to repeal the SGR formula and transition to a high-performing Medicare system using driving principles and core elements the AMA and more than 100 other medical associations submitted to Congress in December.
