News for Senior and Retired Physicians
Looking for a senior physicians group in your area? The AMA can help
Did you know the AMA Senior Physicians Group has a listing of national, state and specialty senior groups across the country? The network has grown to almost 50 senior physician groups, representing more than 6,000 senior physicians. These groups help to expand the AMA's base and strengthen the voice of senior physicians nationwide.
If you are involved in or aware of a senior physicians group not listed in the AMA's network, email Alice Reed of the AMA.
JAMA article examines severe depression in older adults
A case study published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) summarizes effective strategies for detection and treatment of late-life depression.
The case described involves a 69-year-old woman with prolonged depression. Since depression is a common, disabling and costly condition encountered in older patients, clinicians should screen older patients, the study's authors conclude. This can be accomplished using a standard rating scale, as well as initiating treatment such as antidepressant medications or evidence-based psychotherapy, and monitoring depression symptoms.
