New chair to lead national group dedicated to quality improvement
As the AMA-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® (PCPI®) turns its expertise to improving health outcomes across the country, the group has appointed a new chair to lead its quality-improvement efforts.
Frank G. Opelka, MD, a colorectal surgeon in New Orleans, will bring years of quality-improvement expertise to his leadership of the PCPI Executive Committee.
"Dr. Opelka is a nationally recognized leader in health care quality and a staunch advocate for performance improvement and patient safety," AMA President Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD, said in a news release. "As the PCPI continues its work to improve health care quality, Dr. Opelka's experience and reputation will be a valuable asset."
Dr. Opelka is a professor of surgery and executive vice president for health care redesign at the Louisiana State University System. He founded the Surgical Quality Alliance and serves on many national alliances, initiatives and committees, including the National Quality Forum's National Priority Partnership and the Measures Application Partnership. He has been a member of the American College of Surgeons for more than 25 years and has served on the PCPI Executive Committee for the past five years.
The PCPI is a physician-led group made up of 190 member organizations that work together to impact health outcomes in a way that will support improvement in patient care and reduce health care costs.
