Learn the benefits, risks of participating in an HIE
Two new resources from the AMA explain what physicians should know before agreeing to participate in a health information exchange (HIE).
The first resource answers common questions about HIEs, and the second resource explains the specific questions physicians should ask an HIE before committing to participate. By facilitating the electronic exchange of patient health information, HIEs hold the promise of improving quality, safety and efficiency in patient care. But each organization can have a very different structure, data exchange model and selection of services.

Survey illuminates keys to patient satisfaction
Office experiences and physician expertise most influence patients' satisfaction with their physician practice, according to a new survey.
A Harris Interactive Poll issued Sept. 10 surveyed 2,311 adults and found that the three most vital factors for a positive experience were the physician's overall knowledge, training and expertise; the physician's ability to access the patient's overall medical history; and the time the patient spent with his or her physician.
According to a recent article in American Medical News, other services patients reported they would like access to included email communication with physicians, online appointment scheduling, and online billing and payment.
The AMA offers a series of resources that provide practical tips to help physicians enhance patient satisfaction, from appointment scheduling to online medical consultations. An online patient satisfaction survey tool, available from the AMA and Press Ganey Associates, also lets physicians easily and effectively measure their patients' experiences and make meaningful changes to increase patient loyalty and referrals.
