New York psychiatrist receives first IMG Awareness Day Award

Nyapati R. Rao, MD, a psychiatrist in East Meadow, N.Y., is the recipient of the AMA International Medical Graduates (IMG) Section's first IMG Awareness Day Award. The award marks IMG Awareness Day, which will be observed Dec. 6 to highlight and spread awareness about the many contributions IMGs make to American medicine.

The IMG Awareness Day Award is intended to honor an AMA member who has demonstrated a commitment to elevating the status of IMGs, furthering the goals of the AMA-IMG Section and advocating on behalf of IMGs.

Dr. Rao, immediate past chair of the AMA-IMG Section Governing Council, recently was appointed the Von Tauber chair of psychiatry at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), a large, public teaching hospital in Long Island, N.Y., where he also serves as chief academic officer. Under Dr. Rao's leadership, the department of psychiatry at NUMC has excelled in clinical care, education and research. Dr. Rao has also authored many articles and continues to make a significant impact on the IMG community.
