Research symposium, policy discussion highlight AMA-IMG meeting

The AMA International Medical Graduates (IMG) Section held its 15th annual Interim Assembly Meeting Nov. 9–11. The meeting kicked off Nov. 9 with the 10th annual AMA Research Symposium, held in collaboration with the AMA Medical Student Section and the AMA Resident and Fellow Section. For the first time, IMGs certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and awaiting residency presented their research as part of the event. Jigisha Thakkar, MD, won the poster competition, while Leonard Chen, MD, won the podium competition.

The AMA-IMG Congress business meeting also took place Nov. 9, where AMA-IMG Section and AMA House of Delegates policy initiatives were discussed.

The section's Nov. 10 caucus and reception featured a panel discussing maintenance of licensure. Guest speakers Lance Talmadge, MD, chair of the Federation of State Medical Boards; Carol Berkowitz, MD, chair of the CME Maintenance on Licensure Taskforce; and Liana Puscas, MD, of the AMA Young Physicians Section provided their perspectives on maintenance of licensure regulation and assessment.

The meeting culminated Nov. 11 with the Busharat Ahmad, MD, Leadership Development Program. Mike Lynch, the AMA's vice president of external communications, led a workshop to help attendees perfect their public speaking skills.
