Nominate a colleague by Nov. 16 for volunteerism award
If you know a senior physician who has volunteered to provide treatment to U.S. patients who lack access to health care, then nominate him or her for the Jack B. McConnell, MD, Award for Excellence in Volunteerism.
Last year's winner, Robert Bowers, MD, was an activist in organized medicine and community outreach his entire career. Dr. Bowers decided he was not going to slow down as a senior physician, and at age 80, he continued his commitment to improving the health of the uninsured of Chattanooga, Tenn., by serving as the medical director of the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic (VIMC). To date, VIMC has logged over 28,000 patient visits. Watch a video about Dr. Bowers' work.
The Jack B. McConnell, MD, Award is part of the AMA Foundation's Excellence in Medicine Awards, which honor a select group of physicians, residents, fellows and medical students who represent the highest standards of volunteerism, public service and leadership. The Excellence in Medicine Awards are presented in association with Pfizer Inc.
Nominations are due Nov. 16. Visit the Excellence in Medicine Awards Web page to access a nomination form and to learn more about the awards.
