News for Academic Physicians
AMA-SMS meeting details, registration form now online
Register today to attend the AMA Section on Medical Schools (SMS) Annual Assembly Meeting, which will take place June 15–17 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. Log in and register online, then view more details about the meeting, which will take place in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates.
The meeting will feature a panel presentation on understanding the culture and learning environment in academic health centers from the perspective of medical students, residents and practicing physicians. Participants will examine ways to ensure that the "hidden curriculum" does not subvert the formal curriculum and the medical school's mission and values, and lead to a decline in medical student professionalism, empathy and ethics.
In addition, data will be presented from the AMA-convened Innovative Strategies for Transforming the Education of Physicians (ISTEP) research collaborative. ISTEP is a longitudinal study of the learning environment in 21 medical schools from the United States and Canada that seeks to measure how the educational climate at each school influences students' professional attributes.
A second education session will examine emerging issues and challenges facing medical schools and discuss innovative changes, such as model programs to monitor the learning environment to ensure that standards of professional behavior are always maintained.
If you have questions about the meeting, contact Jackie Drake of the AMA via email or at (312) 464-4389.
Reviewers needed for meeting resolutions and reports
Physicians attending the AMA Section on Medical Schools (SMS) meeting in June are invited to help review resolutions and reports submitted for consideration during the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates.
Reviewers will develop a consent calendar of recommended actions and present suggestions to the section for a consensus vote. These actions will help guide the AMA-SMS delegates, alternate delegates and other representatives who will testify in AMA House reference committee hearings on June 17 during the Annual Meeting. A review meeting will take place June 15.
Email Jackie Drake if you are interested in participating as a reviewer.
Med school leaders have group membership option
Medical school leadership teams can enjoy special group membership with the AMA. Through this program, dues rates are discounted for a minimum membership commitment of six members of a leadership team. Further discounts are available for additional commitments from faculty members.
Take advantage of the value of AMA membership while adding your medical school leadership group's voice to AMA efforts to advance medical education, promote excellence in patient care and improve the practice of medicine. The academic physician community provides important leadership that is critical to develop new AMA programs and policies that will shape the future of medicine and medical education.
