News for Academic Physicians

AMA-SMS meeting details, registration form now online

Register today to attend the AMA Section on Medical Schools (SMS) Annual Assembly Meeting, which will take place June 15–17 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Log in and register online, then view more details about the meeting, which will take place in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates. The AMA-SMS emailed information about the meeting to all section representatives last week.

The AMA-SMS meeting will feature two education programs. The panel presentation will focus on understanding the culture and learning environment in academic health centers from the perspective of medical students, residents and practicing physicians. Participants will examine ways to ensure that the "hidden curriculum" does not subvert the formal curriculum and the medical school's mission and values, which could lead to a decline in medical student professionalism, empathy and ethics.

The presentation also will feature data from the AMA-convened Innovative Strategies for Transforming the Education of Physicians (ISTEP) research collaborative. ISTEP is a longitudinal prospective cohort study of the learning environment in 21 medical schools from the U.S. and Canada that seeks to gauge the relationship and interaction between the educational climate of these medical schools and the development of students' professional attributes.

A separate education session will examine emerging issues and challenges facing medical schools and discuss innovative changes, such as model programs to monitor the learning environment to ensure that standards of professional behavior are always maintained.
