Special day will commemorate IMGs
In an effort to highlight and spread awareness about the contributions of international medical graduates (IMG) in American medicine, the AMA International Medical Graduates Section Governing Council has established a special day—IMG Awareness Day—to be observed the first Thursday in December.
The first IMG Awareness Day will be Dec. 6, and IMGs are encouraged to commemorate it in their communities.
As part of the observance, the AMA-IMG Section Governing Council also has established the AMA Awareness Award for a physician who has demonstrated his or her commitment to elevating the status of IMGs, furthering the goals of the AMA-IMG Section and advocating on behalf of IMGs.
Nominate a colleague for the award; a nominee does not have to be an IMG, but he or she must be an AMA member. Nominations are due via email by July 1. Nomination materials should include the nominee's CV and at least one organizational letter of recommendation outlining why the nominee is worthy of the award. More information will be available soon on the AMA-IMG Section Web page.
Watch AMA Wire for more details and for ideas on what you and your organization can do to commemorate IMG Awareness Day. If you have questions, call J. Mori Johnson of the AMA at (312) 464-5678.
