AMA Annual Meeting begins this week; view proposed policies online
Hundreds of physicians and medical students will debate dozens of proposed policies on important topics in medicine during the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates, which will take place June 16–20 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
The reports and resolutions to be considered at this year's meeting address a wide variety of physician and patient concerns, including the predicted physician workforce shortage, quality improvement initiatives, resident work hours and obesity prevention.
Events surrounding the meeting begin June 14 when the AMA sections and special groups gather to discuss policy proposals, attend educational programs, and join in networking and community service activities.
Of particular note are three events taking place June 15:
- The AMA's very first Group Practice Career Fair allows medical students and physicians with an eye on future employment to connect with 10 of the top medical groups in the country, including Mayo Clinic, Geisinger Health System and Permanente Medical Group.
- An AMA Doctors Back to School event taking place at Malcolm X College aims to inspire minority students to pursue a career in medicine. Students entering the Chicago Public Schools' Health Science Academy Program will have an opportunity to learn more about the medical profession through interactions with physicians and medical students.
- A special AMA Equation Experience reception will be held at the AMA's future headquarters, 330 N. Wabash. Attendees will enjoy stunning views of the river and city skyline from the future AMA Plaza while getting a "taste" of Chicago, local brews and a top-secret "AMA Equation" cocktail.
On June 19, the inauguration of Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD, a psychiatrist in Denver, will mark the beginning of his term as the 167th president of the AMA.
Visit the Annual Meeting website for more information about these and other events and to read daily highlights from the meeting. Digital recaps and video of addresses by AMA leaders also will be posted.
