CMS releases proposal for 2013 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule

CMS releases proposal for 2013 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule

A 765-page proposed rule issued July 6 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) outlines the agency's plan for Medicare payments in 2013, including a projected 27 percent payment cut called for under the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula.

The AMA is conducting an in-depth review of the proposal and will submit detailed comments to CMS by the Sept. 4 comment deadline. Of particular interest are the newly proposed policies intended to encourage the coordination of patient care.

"It is critically important that proposed policies for 2013 support physicians' efforts to improve the quality of care for patients while eliminating barriers to successful physician participation in new delivery and payment models," AMA President Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD, said.

"The AMA will continue to work with CMS to encourage successful physician participation in programs aimed at increasing value and accountability and moving Medicare forward to a more effective health care delivery system," Dr. Lazarus said.

On Wednesday, the AMA testified to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee about the need to eliminate the SGR and move to a stable Medicare payment system. Read more elsewhere in AMA Wire.
