AMA president explains what doctors can do to help stop senseless violence

In the wake of the Connecticut school shooting tragedy, AMA President Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD, writes about steps physicians can take to help prevent such violence in a recent post to his blog.

"Such devastating tragedies as the recent school shooting in Connecticut leave our communities grief-stricken and searching for solutions to prevent anything so horrific from happening again," Dr. Lazarus writes.

While he notes that strategies for preventing gun-related tragedies must be multi-faceted and considered carefully, he outlines several things that physicians can do now to help those affected by violence and work toward eliminating gun-related tragedies.

Among the actions he suggests are educating health professionals and the public about responding psychologically to acts of violence, working together to implement evidence-based interventions, and protecting the physician-patient relationship so doctors can have open conversations with patients and parents about firearm safety.

"As a nation we need to do everything we can to help the families, friends and community affected by this unspeakable violence," Dr. Lazarus writes.
