News for Academic Physicians
Apply for open seats on the AMA-SMS Governing Council
Physicians are invited to run for one of four open positions on the 2013–2014 AMA Section on Medical Schools (SMS): chair-elect and three at-large-member positions.
The chair-elect serves for one year, succeeds to the office of chair for one year and then becomes immediate past chair for a year. The three at-large members are elected annually, and no member can serve for more than three one-year terms.
The governing council serves as the direct communication link between the AMA and the Section on Medical Schools representatives and has responsibility for the programs and activities of the section. Learn more about the AMA-SMS Governing Council, including a listing of positions and duties.
To apply or for more information, contact Fred Donini-Lenhoff of the AMA via email or at (312) 464-4635.
Protected sleep for on-call interns improves alertness
Medical interns who were given "protected sleep periods" while working extended overnight hospital shifts had a higher level of cognitive performance the next morning, according to a new study.
The study appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association's Dec. 5 edition, a theme issue on medical education. Other features in this issue include a study looking at the performance of medical students on licensing examinations who were admitted using the multiple mini-interview process, and commentary on the anticipated decrease in the number of international medical graduates entering the United States.
The issue also features data on U.S. medical schools and residency and fellowship programs.
