News for Academic Physicians
Come to Hawaii for the next AMA-SMS meeting
Register today to attend the AMA Section on Medical Schools (SMS) Interim Assembly Meeting, which will take place Nov. 9–10 in Honolulu. Log in and register online, then view more details about the meeting, which will take place in conjunction with the Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates.
The meeting agenda will include a more in-depth examination of the issue of medical student mistreatment in light of new data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Graduation Questionnaire showing that 47 percent of graduating medical students are reporting mistreatment. View American Medical News' coverage of the AAMC data.
In addition, a leading anger management expert will discuss his work in helping health professionals handle their emotions on the job. The meeting also will feature a presentation on using a cross-cultural care survey to assess cultural competency in graduate medical education.
Entries, judges wanted for AMA Research Symposium
This year's AMA Research Symposium provides unique opportunities for just about everyone in the profession.
For residents, fellows, medical students and Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates-certified international medical graduates (IMG) awaiting residency, it's a chance to showcase their original research. For physicians—whether in practice, in academia or retired—it's an occasion to help mentor the next generation of doctors.
The symposium, which will take place Nov. 9 in Honolulu as part of the Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates, annually attracts some of the brightest young minds in medicine. Now in its 10th year, the event—traditionally for residents, fellows and medical students only—has been opened to include all IMGs who are certified by the ECFMG and have not matched to a residency.
Abstracts for the symposium are due Aug. 31, and separate rules and categories for residents and fellows, medical students and ECFMG-certified IMGs awaiting residency are available online. Physicians interested in serving as judges can email Katherine Torres-Hertz of the AMA for details. Judges must be present at the symposium.
The symposium is open to AMA members only. If you're not a member, join today and be part of what promises to be an enriching experience for all involved.
Proposed policy resolutions wanted for Interim Meeting
The AMA Section on Medical Schools (SMS) is seeking ideas or actual language for AMA policy resolutions that address areas of importance to academic physicians. Resolutions are due Sept. 17 and would be debated Nov. 10–13 in Honolulu during the Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates.
As a reminder, the focus of this year's Interim Meeting is on advocacy and legislation. Resolutions for the AMA-SMS June 2013 meeting also will be accepted for discussion at the Interim Meeting. Email Fred Lenhoff of the AMA with questions or proposed resolutions.
Apply for board, review committee appointments
AMA members interested in being part of either the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the Residency Review Committee for Medical Genetics are invited to apply today. Interested candidates must submit their nomination materials to the AMA Council on Medical Education by Sept. 15. Learn more by visiting the Council on Medical Education Web page.
If you're not an AMA member, join today.
