News for Academic Physicians

Presenters wanted for next AMA-SMS meeting

Do you want to present at the next AMA Section on Medical Schools meeting Nov. 9–10 in Hawaii? If you plan to attend the meeting, the section is seeking your ideas for mini-presentations on innovative curricular initiatives in medical education that relate to 1) using technology to aid education and 2) new ways to assess learners and ensure attainment of the competencies.

In addition, the AMA-SMS Governing Council is seeking ideas or actual language for AMA policy resolutions that address areas of importance to academic physicians. Resolutions are due Sept. 17 and would be debated during the Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates, Nov. 10–13 in Honolulu.

As a reminder, the focus of this year's Interim Meeting is on advocacy and legislation. Resolutions for the AMA-SMS June 2013 meeting also will be accepted for discussion at the Interim Meeting in November.

Email proposed presentations or resolutions to Fred Lenhoff of the AMA.

Apply for board, review committee appointments

AMA members interested in being part of either the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the Residency Review Committee for Medical Genetics are invited to apply today. Interested candidates must submit their nomination materials to the AMA Council on Medical Education by Sept. 15. Learn more by visiting the Council on Medical Education Web page.

Who are the members of the AMA Section on Medical Schools?

Official representatives of the AMA Section on Medical Schools, from each Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)- and American Osteopathic Association (AOA)-accredited medical school, consist of the dean or the dean's designate. Each dean may appoint up to four institutional representatives from the institution's undergraduate, graduate or continuing medical education units.

In addition, any AMA member with a faculty appointment to an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school can elect to be a member of the AMA-SMS. Up to 20 at-large members, representing the interests of graduate and continuing medical education, also comprise the section.
