Keeping it in the 'hood

Dr. David Ores treats many local restaurant workers at his Manhattan family practice. He lives in the same neighborhood and credits the Lower East Side People's Mutual Housing Assn. for keeping rents low for both his home and office.

Playful approach

A young patient shares a chuckle with Dr. Ores (bottom) -- and he didn't even see the display of eyeglasses on the skeletal spine. Dr. Ores treats about 60 to 70 patients each week, with about 8 to 10 a month being from the cooperative.

Making round

Dr. Ores is a familiar figure in the neighborhood -- and in the kitchens. Celebrity chef Wylie Dufresne (top left) owns wd~50 restaurant, which is a member of the health care co-op. Italian restaurant Il Bagotta (lower left) was one of the co-op's first participants. Some of the other restaurant owners, chefs, and staff who receive care through the co-op ham it up with Dr. Dave.
