Health Net to close Conn. office and lay off 750As part of its exit from the Northeast market, Health Net is closing its Shelton, Conn., office and laying off 750 employees between January 2011 and March 2012, the company announced in November. Health Net, based in Woodland Hills, Calif., announced in August 2009 that it would shut down its Northeast operations. It reached a deal with UnitedHealthcare that gave United "renewal rights" for Health Net's membership in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The arrangement could be worth as much as $630 million for Health Net, depending on how many of the 578,000 members in those three states opt to renew with United. A company statement said employees losing their jobs would have a chance to apply for other jobs at Health Net of the Northeast and UnitedHealthcare. This content was published online only.
