New GME journal launched - Fla. physician hits $189 million lottery jackpot

New GME journal launched

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in September launched a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the education of medical residents and fellows.

The debut issue of the quarterly Journal of Graduate Medical Education -- billed as the first journal dedicated entirely to GME -- is available online (www.jgme.org).

The issue includes articles on the use of computers to train surgical residents and the assessment of a resident's strengths and weaknesses as a way to improve patient safety.

The journal is intended for program directors, leaders in graduate medical education, faculty, residents and researchers.

"Delivering value around social goals, like good learning for good patient care, requires careful scrutiny of theory, mechanisms of action, context and the outcome of work," said guest co-editor Paul Batalden, MD, professor of pediatrics and community and family medicine at Dartmouth Medical School in Lebanon, N.H., and a faculty member at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice.

Fla. physician hits $189 million lottery jackpot

A Florida dermatologist walked around with the sole winning ticket to a $189 million state lottery for a few days before checking to see if he had the lucky numbers. When William A. Steele, MD, finally discovered he was the winner, he had trouble believing it.

"I'm still in shock," Dr. Steele said several days later in an Oct. 15 news conference announcing the win.

Dr. Steele, owner of a nine-location dermatology practice in Central Florida, claimed the winnings in a lump sum of $101.2 million. He said he planned to give some of the winnings to charitable causes, though he did not specify if any of those would be health-related.
