Drug industry ties -- do they bind?

Compensation, such as honoraria, for participating in meetings, conferences or other activities 28%
Industry funding for research 21%
Compensation as a speaker or faculty at continuing medical education activities 19%
Subsidized or free travel, lodging or other expenses tied to meeting attendance 16%
Royalties, patent licenses or milestone payments 11%
Equity or stock options in exchange for services or intellectual property 6%
Compensation for writing papers or reports 3%
Gifts such as tickets to cultural or sports events 1%

Two-thirds of medical school department chairs have some form of personal relationship with a pharmaceutical or medical device company.

A recent study of the types of industry compensation that 489 department chairs said they received in 2006 found that one in four was compensated for participation in meetings or events, and one in five for speaking engagements.
