Practices try to pare down liability premiums

17.1% reduced coverage amounts.
16.2% suspended practice expansion plans.
13.8% discontinued some services.
11.8% referred high-risk patients elsewhere.
10.5% referred high-risk procedures elsewhere.

A Medical Group Management Assn. survey released in late March found that group practices saw an average 37.2% increase in medical liability insurance premiums between 2003 and 2004. Of the 770 practices that responded to the survey, here's what some are doing to try to hold down insurance costs:
