Nearly two years after an assailant brutally beat her, choked her and left her unconscious in her office, Nina Sanchez, MD, a Miami pediatrician, finally got her day in court.

On Sept. 9 Dr. Sanchez testified in court against her attacker, Anthony Fowler, who was sentenced to life without parole for attempted homicide in connection with her case.

"I'm happy," Dr. Sanchez said. Her ordeal and recovery were chronicled in the "Life Anatomy" special section (AMNews, Oct. 28, 2002).

"I was very nervous [testifying], but it was actually sort of positive because the trial finally happened. It had been hanging over my head for a long time, and it was good to get it over with and get to look him in the eye and say, 'That's the guy.' "

She has been waiting to testify against Fowler since he was arrested less than a week after he had attacked her on Nov. 16, 2001. Several times since then, Miami-Dade county prosecutors had notified her that the trial would be held, only to postpone it for one reason or another, leaving her frustrated, Dr. Sanchez said.

Although Dr. Sanchez has physically and emotionally recovered from the attack, it changed her, she said. "I still cannot get in my car and drive alone, especially if it's long distance or at night."
