Unhealthy growthQuick View. Oct. 14, 2002. ![]() New government figures show that the ranks of uninsured Americans grew by 1.4 million people last year. The number of people with health coverage also increased -- by 1.2 million people to 240.9 million -- likely due to population growth. An estimated 14.6% of the population lacked insurance during all of 2001. Note: In 1999, methodology change lowered the initial estimate of 42.5 million uninsured.
