Next AMA EVP could be selected by Interim Meeting

The committee looking at candidates for the top post is in the second round of interviews.

Delegates to December's AMA Interim Meeting could have the opportunity to meet the AMA's next executive vice president, if all goes as planned by the committee appointed to find the new chief executive.

"Our goal is to find the very best candidate or candidates for presentation to the AMA board for final selection so that person can be presented to the House of Delegates in December," said Donald J. Palmisano, MD, chair of the search committee, who is also the board's secretary-treasurer.

Dr. Palmisano would not say how many candidates had applied for the Association's top post, which has been vacant since late June when the board fired E. Ratcliffe Anderson Jr., MD.

During a mid-October interview, Dr. Palmisano said initial interviews had been completed by the search committee and a second round was taking place. He expressed optimism that the committee's goal of completing the process by the Interim Meeting could be met. But due diligence would not be sacrificed for expediency, he said.

"We will take whatever time necessary to complete our work," he said.

Dr. Palmisano said the committee had sought advice from the federation and listened very carefully to that advice.

"As we've explained to the candidates, we are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about the AMA's mission," he said. "We are looking for someone who is a good manager, someone who is a good leader, and someone who is a good fit for the unique job and responsibilities of the AMA EVP." [...]
