Ohio State, Cleveland Clinic cancel plans for joint medical school
On the heels of a decision to abandon plans to jointly operate a four-year medical school with Ohio State University, Cleveland Clinic officials said a feasibility study is under way to create a new medical school.
Last year, officials at the schools said they hoped to reach agreement on a plan to open a 120-student medical school with an emphasis on problem-based learning at the Cleveland Clinic. However, negotiators could not resolve several issues, including finances, the name of the school, and the faculty and leadership team.
Officials also announced a three-year phase-out of a program in which Ohio State medical students complete their studies at the Cleveland Clinic. OSU students currently enrolled at the Cleveland Clinic will be able to finish their studies. Approximately 60 OSU medical students in the second, third or fourth years of their medical education study full-time at the clinic.
Ohio has six medical schools with some 3,500 students.
