PROFESSIONAMA house welcomes new leadersNancy Nielsen, MD, is elected vice speaker, succeeding John Knote, MD, who was not opposed in his run for speaker.By Bonnie Booth, amednews staff. July 10/17, 2000. Chicago -- Nancy Nielsen, MD, an internist from Buffalo, N.Y., was elected vice speaker of the AMA House of Delegates at the Association's Annual Meeting in June. Dr. Nielsen will take over the post from John Knote, MD, who was not opposed in his run for speaker of the AMA house. Dr. Knote, a diagnostic radiologist from Indiana, succeeds Speaker Richard F. Corlin, MD, who ran unopposed for AMA president-elect. Dr. Corlin is a gastroenterologist in private practice in Santa Barbara, Calif. Dr. Nielsen was a member of the AMA's Council on Scientific Affairs -- a post she resigned once elected vice speaker. She is also a member of the National Patient Safety Board of Directors and is on the Commission for the Prevention of Youth Violence. She is currently the speaker of the house of delegates of the Medical Society of the State of New York. She has also served as president of her county medical society and was president of her hospital's medical staff. Mohamed Khan, MD, an Ann Arbor, Mich., radiation oncologist was elected to fill the seat on the Council on Scientific Affairs vacated by Dr. Nielsen. Dr. Khan has previously served on the council. Patricia L. Turner, a general surgery resident in Silver Springs, Md., was elected to the resident seat on the Council on Scientific Affairs. Copyright 2000 American Medical Association.
