March 2007 Meeting Summary 
Panel discussions were held on the first day of the meeting that addressed the history of health care disparities, advocacy and universal coverage.  Massachusetts Medical Society discussed the work that has been done within the state, information was provided on the role of universal access to health care in reducing health care disparities.  Representative Peter Koutoujian provided a detailed description of how other states can create commissions and task forces.  The program was highlighted by the Honorable Louis W. Sullivan, MD, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, President Emeritus of Morehouse School of Medicine, and chair of the Sullivan Alliance who discussed how increasing diversity in the health professions will reduce racial and ethnic health care disparities.  Jeffrey Drazen, M.D., editor in chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, discussed the role of peer-reviewed medical journal and the media in addressing racial and ethnic disparities and focused on how general research can play a role in helping the physician community care for patients from diverse backgrounds and how that research can be applied to different patient populations.

The first day of the meeting focused on Commission  business.  Educational forums were held on the second day of the meeting focusing on pay for performance, dietary sodium reduction, and pharmacogenetics, health care disparities and personalized medicine.  The Commission also approved the 2007-2008 strategic plan.

The first day of the meeting focused on Commission business with the second day focused on the patient/physician listening session held at Howard University where minority patients and physicians provided testimonies on their non-financial experiences in the health care system and offered suggestions for what physician groups can do to help eliminate disparities
