Quality Improvement Program

About the Quality Improvement Program

Health reform, market changes and increased reporting requirements are placing greater pressure on health care providers than ever before – all requiring them to reevaluate their care processes and operational structures. There are many national programs to drive higher standards of quality, eliminate redundant work, control spending and require more transparency through public reporting.

Although a variety of quality improvement initiatives have been available for some time, they have been primarily focused on hospitals or a specific clinical area. Clinicians need tools and support for their efforts to make sustainable systemic quality improvements now. The Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® (PCPI®) is involved in major quality improvement initiatives and providing valuable tools to physicians to meet the quality needs of physicians today.

Supporting the adage "why recreate the wheel," in 2015, the PCPI will launch a sharing, learning and networking community where healthcare professionals can discuss their issues and initiatives to enable rapid-cycle learning. The community will use a variety of channels and delivery methods such as, presentations, webinars, podcasts, monographs and other tools highlighting the breakthrough work of PCPI member organizations on the front line of quality improvement to ensure the greatest opportunity for successful spread, adoption and sustainment. PCPI will focus on projects that assist members address the triple aim of better health, better care and lower costs. To build the quality improvement learning network community, PCPI is asking organizations to share information about their quality improvement programs and projects using the downloadable case story template. The case stories you share will be used to identify topics for webcasts, presentations and monographs. These stories will also be shared on the PCPI website for members to review and are expected to generate lots of great project and program ideas

As a facilitator, collaborator and convener, PCPI will continue to identify and highlight organizations and other resources that are uniquely positioned to meet the quality improvement needs of PCPI members.

Cross-cutting Improvement Initiatives

PCPI partners with a number of organizations to explore and test cross-cutting improvement initiatives; and then share lessons learned in a numbers in a number of ways with PCPI members. PCPI aims to help members address complex problems in the field that require the expertise of many. Through these efforts, PCPI strives to achieve new insights into intrinsically cross-disciplinary challenges to enable improved outcomes.

For example, based on learnings from the Closing the Referral Loop Project pilot program, PCPI, in collaboration with the Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Health, will launch a tool kit that will help primary care physicians, specialty physicians and their staff improve processes related to physician-to-physician referrals; establish accountability for referrals; and improve information transfer using the electronic health record. These tools will be launched in 2015 starting with PCPI’s March meeting in Arlington, Va., and other elements rolled out during the year.

Quality Improvement Advisory Committee

The Quality Improvement Program receives guidance from the Quality Improvement Advisory Committee (QIAC), which consists of 16 members. The committee advises the PCPI Executive Committee on matters related to improving the quality, safety and efficiency of the health care delivery system and supports activities related to the PCPI QI Program. Examples of activities that may be undertaken by this committee include:

  • Create annual goals and metrics for the PCPI QI Program
  • Provide expertise in improvement models and methods
  • Gather and share knowledge of the improvement landscape to enhance the PCPI’s understanding of current environment
  • Assist in engaging PCPI membership to enhance their role in improvement
  • Monitor status and review results of QI projects
  • Assist with the development of a systematic process to assess and improve PCPI member satisfaction with the PCPI QI Program
  • Communicate the value of the PCPI QI program to PCPI members, physicians and health care professionals, and other health care stakeholders.

Current Focus

The committee's current focus for the program is on disseminating learnings form quality improvement initiatives. This approach will allow the PCPI to engage its membership in the exchange of practical, real-life learnings, and to learn form and build upon the science of large scale spread and adoption. As the program evolves, partnerships and resources may become available to design and develop the innovation center.
