Call for Nominations to Participate in the CMS Episode Grouper Project
The American Medical Association-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® (AMA-PCPI®) and the American Board of Medical Specialties Research and Education Foundation (ABMS REF) have joined with Brandeis University, the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute, Inc. (HCI3), IPRO (the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for New York State), and Booz Allen Hamilton to develop the CMS grouper methodology and accompanying software. Ultimately, the CMS episode grouper will be publically available and used in the Medicare program.
The Affordable Care Act requires the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop a grouper to be used to provide feedback to physicians on resource use. In 2012, CMS awarded a contract to Brandeis to develop the grouper over a 4-year period.
At this time, we invite nominations to the Cardiac III Clinical Work Group and to the Diabetes Clinical Work Group. The two Clinical Work Groups (CWGs) will develop episodes for cardiology and hypertension and seek expertise from the following fields:
- Cardiac Care III Clinical Work Group: Cardiology (eg, hypertension) - Expertise representation in General Internal Medicine; Family Medicine/Primary Care; Cardiology; Endocrinology (Diabetes); Geriatrics; Nephrology; Neurology (Vascular Neurology)
- Diabetes Clinical Work Group: Endocrinology (eg, diabetes) - Expertise representation in General Internal Medicine; Family Medicine/Primary Care; Emergency Medicine; Cardiology; Nephrology; Neurology (Peripheral Neuropathy); Ophthalmology; Podiatry; Vascular Surgery
Nominated physicians should have expertise in one or more of the clinical conditions mentioned above. The majority of the physician members must be currently practicing medicine on at least a part-time basis. In addition, we are seeking members who are methodologists, other health care professionals and external stakeholder representatives (eg, purchaser, consumer, and patient or health plan representative). Ideally, all work group members will be experienced in the development and/or use of episode groupers or performance measures (either quality of care or resource use/cost of care measures).
