The Litigation Center

The Litigation Center of the American Medical Association and State Medical Societies is the voice of America's medical profession in legal proceedings across the country. Established in 1995, as part of AMA's physician resources program, the Litigation Center provides physicians with legal expertise assistance and has participated in more than 250 cases, many with precedent-setting results.

The center’s legal staff works tirelessly to ensure physicians’ rights are upheld in the most important challenges facing today’s working physician. Whether it is protecting the integrity of hospital medical staffs or challenging abusive litigation against physicians, many cases have set important legal precedents and have broad, practical applications for the medical profession and patients. The Litigation Center's docket of cases covers a wide range of topics across the medical-legal landscape, including: physician payment, medical staff privileges, medical liability, peer review, scope-of-practice and many other topics.

The Litigation Center’s recent activity includes successful efforts to preserve the rights of medical staffs and ensure fair compensation for physician services—a few of the many ongoing AMA efforts to protect physicians’ rights.

The AMA helped thousands of physicians file claims in the record-breaking settlement reached in the AMA legal victory against UnitedHealth Group—one of the nations largest health insurers. UnitedHealth paid $350 million to compensate physicians and their patients for 15 years of artificially low payments for out-of-network services.
